Tracee Ellis Ross Awarded Honorary PhD From Spelman College: ‘I Became A Spelmanite!’

Tracee Ellis Ross is the latest star to receive an honorary Ph.D., and she was specifically honored by THE Spelman College!

Tracee Acknowledged The Power & Value Of “Black Sisterhood”

The historically Black women’s college formally honored Tracee during its commencement ceremony on Sunday.

Tracee commemorated the occasion with an Instagram video, which opened with her singing the classic graduation song while actin’ silly in her regalia.

Viewers can then see Tracee’s degree being conferred as the Black-ish star takes the stage.

At that point, she addresses Spelman’s graduating class with a heartfelt speech.

“There is a particular kind of quickening that happens in my heart when I am in a sea of Blackness. But when I get to swim in the particularly special current of Black sisterhood, my heart rate settles, my shoulders drop, and I am reminded of my worthiness. Because I see yours.”

Within her caption, the 50-year-old acknowledged, “I became a Spelmanite today and it was awesome!”

Tracee Ellis Ross Spoke On The “Wonderful Honor” Earlier This Month

News that Tracee would be honored at Spelman’s graduation ceremony broke about a month ago, as the Atlanta-based institution revealed, “Award-winning actress, CEO and producer Tracee Ellis Ross will receive an honorary degree.”

Once word began to spread, Tracee shared a social media upload about the matter and declared she was “excited to join the Spelman sisterhood.”

Additionally, she referred to the opportunity as a “wonderful honor.”

Acknowledging Other Celebs Who Received Honorary Degrees

While speaking of honorary degrees, it’s pertinent to give a shoutout to some other stars who recently received similar privileges.

As The Shade Room reported, Missy Elliott received an honorary Ph.D. from Norfolk State University late last year. Notably, both of her parents attended the HBCU, located only a few minutes away from her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia.

We also have to acknowledge that this was Missy’s second honorary degree, as she received one from the Berklee College of Music in 2019.

Additionally, back in July, Naomi Campbell received an honorary Ph.D. from the University of the Creative Arts.

Congratulations to Tracee Ellis Ross!
